Abstract: To overcome the limitation of the equivalent continuum assumption adopted in conventional plasticity theory, multi-scale investigation is a necessary and inspiring approach, and brings up the importance of homogenization theory, which is the focus of the presentation, and bridges the relatively simple inter-particle reactions to the complicated collective system behavior by considering the particle-scale statics and kinematics, and more importantly the critical phenomena emerged from the scaling-up. Three micro-macro relations, i.e., the quantification of the internal structure, the linkage between the macro stress and the micro contact forces, and the linkage between the macro strain and the micro particle displacements will be briefly introduced. It will continue with the experimental validation of DEM approach, the internal structure quantification, and the particle-scale mechanisms of material deformation in particular with material anisotropy and stress rotation.

Bio: Prof Xia Li has been interested in and working on multi-scale investigations of granular materials. She obtained her BSc from the department of hydraulic and hydropower engineering, Tsinghua University, China in 2001, and her PhD in geotechnical engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), HKSAR, China in 2006. She worked as a post-doc at HKUST and the University of Nottingham before being awarded the Nottingham Advance Research fellow in 2010 and became an assistant professor at the University of Nottingham since 2011. She has an established track record in particle-scale computer modelling, the continuum-scale constitutive theory, and the analytically established homogenization theory for granular mechanics. She also worked in field of multi-phase granular materials, in particular on the hydrodynamics of gas-solid fluidized bed and the segregation in the poly-disperse granulate systems. In 2016, she received the funding of the 1000 young talent program from the Chinese government and started the professorship at Southeast University, China, where she is integrating her theoretical and numerical research in granular mechanics with the thriving engineering work in particular although not limited to offshore geotechnical engineering. She is also appointed as the adjunct associate professor at Monash University, Australia in 2017.
